Unboxing and Design

The first thing we see with this box is that big 67W charger. Yes, Xiaomi includes it in the package, which these days with flagships seems to be such a big thing. Once you open up the box, you will be greeted by a little insert with a SIM Ejector pin, regular literature, and a soft case. This is very much appreciated given that the back here is Glass. And depending on the color you go for it will be a Black, Green, Blue, or Pink smartphone in the box. The Green version, by the way, is not glass but vegan leather. Anyway, this phone has got a USB type C cable with an orange accent.

A quick tour around the Xiaomi 12 device will show the power and volume keys and the SIM tray. There’s no IP certification here and there is also no support for micro SD. The USB port you see over here is just USB Type-C 2.0 so transfer speeds are gonna be relatively low. And there is no headphone jack. On the flip side, there are stereo speakers. These are tuned by Harmon Kardon. There’s also support for Dolby Atmos from a software perspective. They’ve even retained the IR blaster. One of the last brands to do so.

Compared to Pro Version

The first thing that Xiaomi 12 doesn’t have compared to the Pro variant is the 127W charger. This one has a 67W one which is still something do not get me wrong. And as far as wireless charging goes, both of them are the same 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless. The battery capacity is different in that this one has 4500 mAh compared to Li-Po 4600 mAh.

The next difference is with these displays. Here you get 6.28 inches compared to 6.73 on the Pro. And this is a Full HD Plus compared to Quad HD Plus. But both are AMOLED panels with 120Hz refresh rates. But the next difference is that the Pro gets an LTPO panel which means it can switch between 60 and 120 Hz. Perhaps other differences worth mentioning are 419 PPI density compared to 521 PPI density and 50MP + 13MP + 5MP camera compared to 50MP + 50MP + 50MP camera on the Pro version.

Cameras

First off, let us start by saying we absolutely adore the camera on the Xiaomi 12. Its great design choice makes it look really pleasant. Now the three sensors you see here are totally different from the three sensors you’ll find on the Xiaomi 12 Pro. Does that mean these cameras are bad? Well, the primary shooter is a 50 MP, f/1.9, 26mm (wide), 1/1.56″, 1.0µm, PDAF, OIS lens. Its images are decent the results of which are comparable to Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G’s. The secondary shooter is a 13 MP, f/2.4, 12mm, 123˚ (ultrawide), 1/3.06″, 1.12µm lens and the third a 5 MP, 50mm (telephoto macro), AF lens.

There is up to [email protected] (HDR10) video recording with the main camera. Other qualities include [email protected] (HDR10+), [email protected]/120/240/960fps, [email protected], gyro-EIS. So actually how are the selfies of this Xiaomi 12? They are crisp, sharp, and well-detailed. We think Xiaomi has done a good job with edge detection on the portraits. These are made possible by Xiaomi 12’s 32 MP, 26mm (wide), 0.7µm front-facing lens.

Display

The Xiaomi 12 is easy to use single-handed thanks to its large edge-to-edge curved screen. Underneath its display is an optical fingerprint scanner. It’s pretty fast, pretty responsive. Nothing really to complain about it save for its placement? It is a bit lower than usual. Even lower than how it has been placed on the Pro version. On top of the display is a hole punch. This houses its 30MP selfie camera.

The display features here are as follows:

  • OLED, 1B colors, 120Hz, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, 1100 nits (peak)
  • 6.28 inches, 95.2 cm2 (~89.2% screen-to-body ratio)
  • 1080 x 2400 pixels, 20:9 ratio (~419 PPI density)
  • Corning Gorilla Glass Victus

Performance

Let us also talk about software. What you are getting here is the new MIUI 13 built on top of Android 12. Given the hardware underneath, Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (4 nm), 8 or 12 GB of DDR5 RAM, 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. With this combination and the 120 Herz display, the Xiaomi 12 feels very snappy. News flash, this is one of the first phones to break the 1 million mark AnTuTu. The Xiaomi 12 is one of the first phones to launch with the latest Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (4 nm) chipset. Yes, the one that’s been breaking records all over.
